There are a small number of outposts maintained on the mainland as an extra security buffer against potential invading forces. Generally manned by about eight soldiers, each tour lasts 2 months with half the men cycling out every month. The outpost is generally commanded by the soldier that has been there the longest. The group in their second month is considered as being in charge, however, there are instances where a soldier prefers outpost duty and stays on the mainland for a year or longer.
Outpost duty is dangerous as patrols frequently encounter a wide variety of deadly creatures.
