Known simply as “The Channel,” this is the narrow body of water that separates The Mainland from Hook Island. It is quite shallow and there is a swift current that runs north to south. The channel is full of dangerous reefs. Over the years, several of the flat-bottom sailboats that are used to cross the channel have sunk and been lost.
Since the island has been colonized, there have been three occasions where the water became so shallow that it was possible to wade across to the mainland.
